European Commission proposed to spend over €9.2 billion on European Broadband

The European Commission has recently proposed to spend over €9.2 billion on European Broadband projects, which would take place between 2014 and 2020.

This project could give the majority of EU citizens and businesses access to super high-speed broadband networks, with the potential of over 500mbps connections… making Europe the most connected area in the world.

Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) is responsible for funding the project, which would be the biggest internet broadband network investment in the world.

The UK is currently ranked sixth out of 27 states throughout Europe; however, British Telecom recently announced 34 new exchange areas would be targeted in the next part of its on-going £2.5 billion investment to take fibre broadband to two-thirds of the UK before 2014. This would make the UK the fastest connected nation per population in the world.

BBC News: ‘The Netherlands came out on top with 94% of its homes connected, followed by Sweden and Luxembourg (91%), and Denmark (90%).

By contrast, only 45% of Bulgarian households were linked to the internet, while the figure was 47% in Romania.

Eighty-five per cent of the UK’s homes have access, putting it ahead of Germany, Ireland, France and Spain.”
