We all have very important data saved somewhere, more than likely on a number of our devices. The only thing is, if we don’t keep it secure enough, we could very well lose it forever. Our identities could be stolen, money could be stolen, and a number of other catastrophes could occur. This is the only guide you need to help you keep your data secure:
Carry Out a Risk Assessment
First of all, carry out a risk assessment to work out how your data could be stolen or lost. Try to look at it from every angle so you can attempt to come up with solutions. The idea is that you pre-empt every way things could go wrong, and then write down how you could stop it from happening. You could have your own data protection plan written out so that everybody who works for you can be in the know about what to do.
Backup Your Files
Backup your important files as soon as you can. There are a variety of ways you can do this; you can either print them out manually, transfer them to another building, or save them to a disc. You could even back them up on the cloud so that no matter what happens, you can access them on any device at any time.
Use Different Passphrases
Most people use the same passwords on different sites for quickness. To ensure your ultimate security, you should use different passphrases. Not just words: phrases. A phrase will be much harder to guess than a word. You should also consider including capital letters and numbers to make it even harder to crack.
Use Antivirus Software
Antivirus software is essential for keeping your computers clean and healthy. Hackers will try anything to get your valuable information these days, so don’t give them an easy ride. Check over your computers for viruses regularly and keep the software updated.
This advice is all well and good before you have an issue, but what about if you’ve already had a problem with your data being stolen/lost?
Data First Digital Solutions say that the only thing you can really do is head to a professional company who could retrieve your data for you. If that fails, you will have to cut your losses and be more careful next time. It all depends on where your data has been stolen from and what kind of data it is. Contacting the police might help, but in many cases there isn’t much that can be done. If you’re lucky, you may be able to get your data back if your stolen devices are retrieved. Lost or damaged data can be harder to get back depending on what happened.
Just be sure you take precautionary measures as soon as you can so you don’t need to worry about the consequences of lost data. If you have any experience with this kind of thing, leave your thoughts in the comments. Thanks for reading!
