If you’re a fan of either LEGO-based video games or more importantly, the Lord of the Rings franchise in general, you should need to pay close attention to what I’m about to tell you.  Don’t consult the council of Elrond, immediately hop onto the back of your won giant eagle and fly over to scoop up your own copy of LEGO – the Lord of the Rings, post-haste!  You’re probably going to love this game.

Yes, this is a review for one of the latest LEGO games to hit store shelves, and as you have probably already guessed, they’re doing Tolkien this time around.   However unlike some of their previous titles, this one encapsulates the entire trilogy.  To make a long story short, this game is a big win in multiple departments.

Visuals

Everything else aside, the graphics in this title are splendid, especially where LEGO games are concerned.    All of the environments are clearly attempt to recreate the magic of the various atmospheres that were eloquently portrayed in the films, and special attention was also given to lighting.  If you’ve played previous LEGO games you already know what to expect in terms of visuals, this game is basically a colorful, animated version of middle-earth, replete with square-headed versions of our favorite characters.

Gameplay

Although the game doesn’t completely recreate the narrative of the books, it does capture the “epicness” of the movies quite well (with some minor alterations).  At this point it’s safe to assume that you’ve seen the films (who hasn’t, right?); perhaps the best aspect of this game is how it delivers all the classic scenes and moments.  In terms of gameplay, you will solve puzzles, wage extended battles in the typical hack-and-slash manner, as well as explore the environment.

It’s also worth mentioning that there are around 80 characters to unlock as well as plenty of potential for upgrades, whether we’re talking about weapons or character abilities.  Oh yeah…and this title actually features genuine side quests, which adds a great deal of intrigue to the already incredible amount of activities you can engage in.  Likewise, this title features co-operative gameplay; meaning, you and a friend can face the trek to Mordor together.

Verdict

While LEGO – the Lord of the Rings is clearly a game which was designed for children and younger gamers, adults will also find plenty to like about this wonderful title.  It’s rare that any video game which has appeal for kids is able to pull veteran gamers in as well; needless to say, LEGO LOTR is one of the few that achieves this.  The bottom line is that this wonderful game is a must-buy for fans of the Lord of the Rings (series/books/movies/videogames) and is also a great buy for those who have children that they frequently game with.
