Dishonored Review

‘Dishonored’is a game that had been steadily generating some significant hype right up to its inevitable release.  Most of the videos showed gameplay footage and design that’s somewhat reminiscent of several major franchises as well (Assassin’s Creed, Bioshock, etc…).  Well, to make a long story short, ‘Dishonored’is definitely an original game and is perhaps one of the more original titles to emerge in recent years.

The main setting for this game is a ‘steam punk’–esque city that feels a bit like ‘ye olde London’only with some decidedly modern appointments (and magic).  Everything is going great until your Empress is assassinated; naturally, this sets your character off on a streak of revenge and vengeance (maybe a new word is in order here?  How about: ‘Revengeance”?)  At any rate, your tasks and goals are not linear or set in stone, and gamers have an abundance of choices at their fingertips with regards to how they choose to complete their missions.  As previously mentioned, your character is able to summon certain magical abilities which will aid them in various ways; for example, you can engage your super-human agility, possess other creatures, teleport, etc…Basically, it’s not the goals themselves which make this game interesting, it’s how you choose to complete them.

Visuals

On the graphics front, ‘Dishonored’is also a major contender.  Aside from the amazing art style associated with this game, there is an extraordinary level of detail and precise lighting effects found throughout.  In short, this is one of the better looking recent releases, for sure.   Everything runs just as it should as well, with virtually no graphical hang-ups or stumbles.  Most gamers are going to fall in love with the setting itself, and because it’s such a visual feast, careful exploration is also much more rewarding.

Gameplay

While ‘Dishonored’is in fact a first-person perspective game it gives off a different vibe than most FPS titles.  For starters, you’re not simply running and gunning your way through areas, there is hand-to-hand, sword fighting and your powers to contend with, so it’s not as if you’re in any way limited.

Perhaps the biggest shortfall of the game is its somewhat lackluster story, which could perhaps be more engrossing (but don’t get the wrong idea, it’s still cool).  Ultimately however it’s up to you to choose how to play the game; you can approach things with a ‘gung-ho’mentality or go all stealth, the choice is yours to make (either way is fun).

Verdict

Without a doubt this is going to be one of the games that people are going to spend an awful lot of time discussing.  The truth is ‘Dishonored’is one of the more original games to emerge in recent times and has several things going for it.  At this point it’s also very likely that we’ll see this game concept expand into a fully-fledged franchise.  In a nutshell, this is an amazing game that you should definitely buy if you consider yourself a modern gamer.
