Friday the 13th is a truly innovative and exciting multiplayer title. Since its release all the way back in 2017, the game has continued to captivate gamers’ attention thanks to its unique setup; one player plays as killer Jason Voorhees, while the others take control of the camp counselors who must escape his wrath. Both Jason and the counselors have access to unique abilities; Jason can teleport anywhere he likes and can sense nearby counselors, while counselors have access to weapons, traps, and other methods of stopping Jason’s rampage.
Given that Friday the 13th is entirely reliant on multiplayer (there is a single-player mode, but it’s not much to write home about), the question becomes thus: is Friday the 13th crossplay? Can you play the game alongside friends on other platforms, and if you’re Jason, can you hunt down counselors playing on different consoles to you? The answer probably isn’t the one you want to hear, but sometimes, you have to confront the grisly truth if you want to move on with your life.
So, is Friday the 13th crossplay compatible?
Unfortunately, the answer to this question is a simple and straightforward no. Friday the 13th does not support crossplay across any of its different platforms. This means that if you’re playing the game on PS4 and you’ve got a friend you want to play it with on Xbox One, you simply won’t be able to play the game together. The same goes for every single combination and permutation of platforms; if you’re playing on PC and you want to play with a PlayStation player, for example, no dice. We hate to be the bearers of bad news, but there is no Friday the 13th crossplay right now.
What about PS4 and PS5 Friday the 13th crossplay?
Happily, if you are playing Friday the 13th on PS4 and you want to play with someone who’s on PS5 or vice versa, this is a feature that’s supported. As with many PS5 games, you’re effectively playing Friday the 13th on PS4 when you’re playing on PS5, as there’s no dedicated PS5 version for the game. This means that playing with ‘other’PS4 players shouldn’t be a problem, so feel free to join up with some other PS4 or PS5 players and flee from Jason’s terrifying, imposing figure.
Can you play Friday the 13th crossplay on Xbox?
Much like PlayStation, if you’re playing Friday the 13th on Xbox platforms – i.e., if you’re playing on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S – then crossplay between those platforms will be supported. You will be able to play the game alongside other Xbox players, but of course, you won’t see PlayStation or PC players, so your friends will have to have Xbox consoles if you want to play with them. It’s better than nothing, but it’s a real shame we’ll never see actual, honest-to-goodness Friday the 13th crossplay added to the game.
Will Friday the 13th crossplay ever be added?
Nope. In late 2020, the developers for Friday the 13th, IllFonic, shut down the game’s dedicated public servers, which means that it’s not getting any more updates and regular public games aren’t supported anymore. That, in turn, means that if you do spot a public match on Friday the 13th right now, it’s not a server run by the developers; instead, it’s a private server hosted by one of the game’s players, which means you’re essentially putting yourself at their mercy. Expect hackers and weird game variations galore, as usually happens when these kinds of games shut down their public servers.
Since the game’s public servers have been shut down and no more updates are forthcoming, that also means that Friday the 13th crossplay will never be added to the game. Barring some kind of miraculous revival on the part of the developers (which is extremely unlikely, so don’t hold your breath), Friday the 13th crossplay is pretty much impossible at this point. Time to find another asymmetrical multiplayer horror game to play with your friends, eh?
Is the Friday the 13th single-player mode any good?
So Friday the 13th crossplay isn’t a thing, but you’re wondering if there’s any element of the game that’s still worth checking out. Again, the answer is unfortunately ‘noâ, but it’s a slightly more qualified no this time. There is a Friday the 13th single-player mode, but sadly, it’s not particularly great. It casts you as Jason chasing down camp counselors across a series of maps, and there are challenges to complete, but in essence, the Friday the 13th single-player mode is basically just training for the multiplayer; it’s you versus a group of bots, and it’s never particularly compelling, nor is it anywhere near as exciting as the multiplayer mode.
Are there any Friday the 13th alternatives that have crossplay?
Yep. If you want to play an asymmetrical multiplayer game with horror theming that has full crossplay support (and, crucially, that’s still being updated by the developers), then the game you want is Dead by Daylight. This game casts one player as a killer and the others as survivors, and the two must go up against one another until one emerges victorious. Dead by Daylight has full crossplay support between PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch, and what’s more, it has a range of different killers and survivors available. Right now, Jason Voorhees isn’t available in the game, but you can play as several other iconic slasher villains including Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers, and Scream‘s Ghost Face.
