If you’re a social media connoisseur, then you’ve probably been using Snapchat since the app was created. Snapchat can trace its history all the way back to 2011, when it first appeared on the iOS App Store as something called “Picaboo”. A disappearing pictures app made a lot of sense; there might be lots of pictures you’d want your friends, family, or colleagues to see once before they disappear, and it adds a fun transitory element to experiences.
However, one of Snapchat’s most esoteric features is its so-called “Snapchat score”, or “Snap score”. Open up Snapchat and take a look at your profile. Do you see a number next to your username? That’s your Snapchat score; it shows you how active you are on the app, and how much you’ve participated in various Snapchat activities. Unhelpfully, however, Snapchat isn’t particularly forthcoming regarding exactly how you can improve or boost this score.
So, what is the “Snapchat score”?
In essence, your Snapchat score is a numerical marker that denotes how much you’re using Snapchat. In its purest form, the Snapchat score, or Snap score as some people call it, shows how many Snaps you’ve sent and received. However, it goes much deeper than that, and there are various other factors that go into boosting or lowering your Snapchat score. According to the official Snapchat website, these are the things that change your Snapchat score:
- Sending Snaps
- Receiving Snaps
- Posting Stories
- “A couple other factors”
Checking your Snapchat score is easy, of course, but knowing what you can do to improve it is very difficult indeed. Here are some of the things that seem to improve your Snap score, so if you’re looking for ways to boost your presence on the app, these activities should work. Again, we’re not 100% on this, but these are the things that seem to work based on what the community has found.
First off, you should try to send as many Snaps as possible. This is pretty straightforward and should happen organically as a result of simply using Snapchat. Remember that you shouldn’t spam your friends, as this has a good chance of annoying them and could have the opposite effect; you could see yourself blocked on Snapchat, which means that you’ll find it much harder to raise your Snap score!
Just like sending Snaps, receiving Snaps is a great way to boost your Snap score, so make sure that you’re interacting with your buddies on Snapchat as much as you possibly can. Keep sending and receiving those Snaps, keep opening up Snapchat every chance you get (without becoming overbearing, of course), and eventually, you’ll see that score start to rise.
Keeping up Snapchat Streaks
If you send and receive Snaps with your friends each and every day, then you’ll start something called a Snapchat Streak. This is just a fun way of saying that you’re keeping up daily messaging habits, but if you want to improve your Snapchat Score (which, let’s not forget, is also purely cosmetic and doesn’t actually do anything), then keeping up your Snapchat Streak is a great way to do that.
Watch and post Stories
Snapchat Stories are another excellent way to keep up your Snapchat Score. Be sure to try and post as many Stories as you can (within reason, naturally), and make sure to view your friends’ Stories too. This will boost your score, so try to do it every day. It can be easy for Snapchat to become an all-consuming habit, though, so schedule in regular breaks as well!
Watch Discover videos
The Snapchat Discover feature was introduced all the way back in 2015, serving as a fun and addictive way to show what’s going on in the world of celebrities when it comes to Snapchat. If you want to boost your Snap score, then you should watch as many Discover videos as you can, as this humble little feed will give you some extra numbers each time you fire up a video.
Add more friends
One of the factors Snapchat doesn’t tell you about when it comes to raising your Snapchat score is adding more friends. The more friends you have on Snapchat, the higher your score will be; this stands to reason, too, because the more friends you have, the more chances you’ll have to send and receive Snaps, so you can boost your Snapchat score that way as well.
Fire up Snapchat after being inactive
Booting up Snapchat and browsing through a few Snaps after being inactive is another way you can boost your Snap score. Users seem to have noticed that the score goes up when using the app after a period of absence, although if you are a regular Snapchat user, you probably shouldn’t stop using the app just so you can boost your Snap score, as posting Snaps and adding friends will have more effect in the long run.
Hopefully, Snapchat will see its way to informing its users exactly how they can boost their Snap score sometime in the future. However, given that this number is purely for bragging rights and doesn’t actually have any impact on the app’s functionality, it’s likely the makers of the app will continue playing their cards close to their chest.
